Contemplation

See that lone figure
in the distance
along the uneven breakwall?

Miss your step
and down slips
your foot
your ankle
your leg
crrrrrrack.

But see that lone figure?
She is sure-footed
wise
and
careful.
She will not
fall.

That's
my
editor:
Joanna Cotler.

The
best.

  1. Bonjour,

Un lieu où tout semble si serein... où l'esprit peut faire le vide.

    Gros bisous ♡

  3. Unless she's a 'wide body' and she doesn't look to be, she should have little trouble making it back. I've survived the way out and back myself on occasion. That's quite a view from out there. You got a book about Maine life coming? or Maine cows? of Maine water?

  4. Lucky are the 2 of you to be partners in publishing. And she looks like quite an explorer out there, I can almost see her dancing with enthusiasm!

    Lovely photo and words. Soothing.

  6. Oh, I just love this post! Makes me think editors have the ability to get right to the heart of a manuscript. They walk so close to the work, they feel every part of the ocean in front of them.

  8. Your writing has taught us so many different ways to incorporate your craft moves into our writing. In one of your blog posts, "Contemplation," we found a craft move that we love and that we use in our own writing! The way that you space the sentences really emphasizes each word and makes the reader think about why you made that writing decision. And it makes you think about the meaning of each word. Also, we liked how you put a question into this poem. The question: "But see that lone figure?" really made us feel more engaged in your writing because it made us think back to the picture. Overall, you and your craft moves inspire us to write every day!

    1. Thank you for reminding me of this post and of this 'craft move.' Sometimes I'm not consciously aware of all the 'moves' I am using, but I know I learned them gradually, over many years of writing. xx
