Exploring Maine

Even though we live on a lake (in western New York state), we were lured up to a lake in Maine for the past two weeks. Our daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren have been singing Maine's praises for several years, and so we joined them, and we saw what all the fuss was about.

Clear, clear, clear water, in abundant lakes with granite islands, perfect for kayaking and swimming.

Miles and miles of coastline jagged with bays and coves and rocks.

Masses of blueberry hills and hiking trails and vistas of green mountains and blue-gray lakes and ocean.

"Lobstah!" Fresh, tender, sweet lobster.

And it was all fine, fine, fine.  But finest of all were the grandchildren: the joyous, energetic, healthy, loving, imaginative grandchildren.  For them, I would go most anywhere.

You been to Maine? Have a favorite spot there?

P. S. Brattcats: we loved having time with you en route. Thank you so much for your warm welcome.

P. S. Birdman and Elenka: we had all intentions of tracking you down (with forewarning), but were swallowed up by all of the above. Next year?

  1. We're heading up to Bath, Maine on Friday for a brief trip of three days. We have a five year old and an 8 year old so we'll visit Popham Beach. visit the Children's Museum of Maine in Portland, and go to the Maine State Aquarium to pet some sharks!

  3. No, this Texas girl has never been to Maine. I'd love to someday though.

Missed seeing you around. Glad you've returned.

  4. What fun! Sounds like the ideal place to visit...especially with your family.

Tonight Gary is staying down the road from you in Bemis. We'll both be there the 26th and 27th. Hope I can find you.

  6. Elenka and I have driven over most of the blue highways in the state but there's something special about pulling back into our driveway after time away. Grew up on the ocean and missed most lake adventures. Next time? It's a date.
I really like your float/dock image here.

  7. Lovely post. I have never been in the northeast but loved to see some early tv programs broadcast from those states.

  8. What wonders you all experienced together, Sharon! We visited Maine two summers ago and loved the hike to the top of Cadillac Mountain (and picking wild blueberries along the trail). Though we looked out at the ocean, the vegetation and scenery were so similar to our own favorite trails along Lake Superior that we felt we were still home. You should visit the cliffs, lakes, waterfalls, and trails of northern Minnesota someday!

I, too, loved the dock photograph. The water is so still!

  9. We love Maine so much we're moving there, we hope, next summer!

There is a wonderful YA and crime fiction writer, Lea Wait, and her artist husband who cooked an amazing dinner for me one evening almost two years ago now, at the beginning of our fantasizing about moving there.

She has a lovely post here about her grandchildren visiting them in Maine: http://mainecrimewriters.com/uncategorized/visiting-grandma-in-maine-when-grandma-is-an-author

We have been steeping ourselves in Maine writing and all things Maine while huddled up next to our A/C vents down here in SC.

My son was in the waves at York Beach just a couple of weeks ago. It was so cold I screamed myself hoarse trying to go in with him. In the end, I was left to watch him from the warm sand as he got hammered happily by the waves.

So fun to see your images here!

    All the best,

    Florence
